The devastating impact of global warming has already begun. Think of all the victims of Katrina, tsunami in Asia, increasing mosquito-borne diseases, droughts and other earth changes. Those events are directly related to the environment and greenhouse gases. How many times have you talked about how weird the weather has become where you live? Remember the heatwave in France, Italy and other countries that resulted in thousands of deaths? What does it all mean and why are all these things happening?

Part of the problem is that people are not fully aware of the consequences of global warming. Please try to change that by learning more about it.

There’s a film to be released on May 24 in the U.S. called “An Inconvenient Truth” (watch the movie trailer) that is a reality check we need to stop ignoring.

We can’t continue on this downward path.

And a Happy Earth Day to you too. A clerk at one supermarket that I went shopping at today (Safeway), frowned when I said “No plastic bags, I have a huge cooler in my car.” She asks, “Well how are you gonna transport your groceries to your cooler in the car?” (There’s a smarty pants wherever you go). Well, doh, I guess she didn’t see the store shopping cart that I was leaning on.

On the other hand, when I repeated the ‘No plastic or paper bags’ to the healthfood store clerk, she just about reached over and kissed me. Yay!

rowena, here we don’t ever even get a bag, which i always forgot at first but now i keep bags in the car. i like how you got “rewarded” for good behavior. it should be like that all the tiime!
i’ve been wondering about what hawaii does with all their trash? do they send it to georgia? build new islands with it? (like in japan)

i’m a downer, what can i say.  i used to think that earth day was to celebrate the earth and now i feel like it’s a cry for help.

Over here on Kauai they dig a deep hole and throw it all in. I thought they burned some of it but my dad says nope. Disgusting isn’t it? The thing that I hate is that when we go to bring the recyclable plastic bottles to the resource center, we have to remove the plastic caps because they say that it’s a different type of plastic that can’t be reused. So where does it go? In that damn big hole in the ground. I guess you can’t win them all but I will certainly sew a big canvas shopping bag for my dad and tell him to use it at Safeway the next time. Let’s see what they have to say about that!!

incinerating is usually worse but it’s all a problem. i guess they have to put the trash we make SOMEWHERE. it’s just that landfills are really dangerous not to mention gross and especially evil here in france (i actually toured one once.)

but i think they are a lot better at managing the amount of waste produced in hawaii. there’s just not that much space!

omg bruce. that is a scary picture. the whole perfectly shaped rectangle part looks totally man-made like it was made with trash. where is that?
