Géoportail: Google Earth’s French Rival, Or Not

geoportail

While everyone in France was preparing to watch the World Cup match with France playing against Togo to try to qualify for the next round, Jacques Chirac unveiled a new website called Géoportail offering high-resolution aerial imagery of France and all of the French territories, in an attempt to rival the planetary success of the US pioneer in the field, Google Earth. Despite the gobs of people more concentrated on all things football, there still was a formidable number of users trying to access the service to try it out, but because the system wasn’t prepared to receive all of the traffic once launched, the system crashed.

Boo hoooo!

Bonsoir,

Thanks for ther tip! I’ve been eagerly waiting for a ‘quality Google Earth France’ for my U.S. clients who want to show off their European properties to their friends. Google is still disappointing, but Géoportail looks like it could use some tuning up too :(

yup, didier – they really should have expected a burst of traffic but sadly, no. and geoportail doesn’t cover the whole earth, you’re right but neither does google earth (there is a lot of missing areas). if the french portail knows better, they will hopefully expand their access to the rest of the world to indeed compete with google earth. that will probably take them approximately 8 thousand years, give or take a few hundred ;-)

frog, isn’t that the first thing people look for? their homes! i haven’t looked for mine yet but i’m dying to see the aerial view of my area. i sincerely hope they get some server power.

It’s a shame. I really can’t believe that the president of France was promoting that site launch. A national IT catastrophe for France!

I have started a thread with some news links at performancing.com: Fiasco: France creates a website launch catastrophe Maybe somebody want to comment?
