Curiosities: Trash Cans

restetrash While we were visiting the town of Uzès, we noticed that all of the city trash bins had the word, “Reste” on them. Reste means stay or remain (perhaps remaining?)
I wasn’t sure that it was even a trash can. It does look like one (I know, duh.) but the “reste” threw me off. I checked.

Me: “Stay trash, stay! What the? The rest? What’s left? Trash stays here?”

Me: “What’s that “reste” all about?”

S.O.: “Me too, what the!? I have no idea.”

Me: “You’re fired, French man!”

Will someone please explain?

“Le reste” as a noun also means “the rest” in the sense of “remainder” or “remnant” or “residue”. “Un reste de poulet” means “leftover chicken”. It’s often used in the plural: “les restes de cuisine” or “les restes de repas”. So these bins are probably for recycling food scraps.

thanks for that, stan! i was thinking it was “the rest” of something, but what? if it was for food, no one using it seemed to know. it was filled with trash. oops!

“Restes” mean leftovers, but I don’t get “reste” (singular). I wrote to the city of Uzes to ask them what it means, exactly — will keep you posted.

No feedback from the Mairie d’Uzes yet. August recess? If, and whenever I get something, I’ll post it here.

Here in Belgium it means all the trash that can’t be recycled. No paper, no glass, no biodegradables, no drink cartons, plastic bottles or cans (Belgium is quite heavy on recycling), just “the rest”, you know?
