Pugs ‘n’ Things From Provence or China?

pug in provence
Pugs are among my favorite dog breeds and I notice them everywhere. I liked how the paws on this one were spread out but then realized why they were like that: he was way too fat, which is so very, very bad for dogs especially short nose breeds, plus his nails were in desperate need of a trim. Please don’t overfeed your dogs no matter how piggish they are and no matter how pathetic they look while begging for food. Don’t fall for that game. Obesity will shorten the life of your dog.

Back to this post. At an outdoor market in Provence, where this adorable fat pug was spread out, we noticed souvenir linens, towels and napkins with the word “Provence” on them. Nice enough stuff and very expensive.

However, much like the origins of the Pug, these were also not originally from France but, in fact, from…China.

Does it matter? Probably not. I don’t know – To some, I’d imagine. People buy little Eiffel Tower key chains all the time, oblivious and indifferent that they were made in China. But if I buy something in France like a FRENCH SOUVENIR for someone, I’d really appreciate it if it were made in France. It’s just not possible sometimes, I do realize.

Just some travel irony for a scorching hot Friday. Stay cool, everyone.

I agree that if you buy a souvenir it should at least be made in the country you are buying it from ;)

The best story about this kind of thing is one my father used to tell when I was a kid. Sometime in the 1930’s, one of his friends had gone to a North African French colony (I don’t remember if it was Algeria, Morocco, or Tunisia), and had brought back, as a present for his parents, a rug that he had bought at a souk there. But when his parents saw the tag on the back of the rug, they immediately realized that this rug had been manufactured at his own father’s textile mill, in Roubaix! This was the era when not everything was made in China yet.

Pugs are cute, but I still like Boston terriers better. :o )

Most souvenirs are not made in France because French people are on strike, don´t want to work or simply, it´s not their responsibility entertaining any foreigner like us.

Personally, I go for the “made in China”, guarantee of quality, of service and I feel good giving my money to someone who worked for it rather than wasting it on an spoilt, lazy and arrogant stomach.

When you see that the price of a made in china “provence patterned towel” is 20 euros, imagine if it was made in france, prices would be 50 or 100 euros for a little handkerchief!
La france est trop chere, c’est trop injuste!

good story, e. and lulu would be very grateful for your dog comment.

uranus, uranus, uranus. “french ppl are on strike” :D

prices in france are strangely and unfairly escalated to the extreme, i agree with you, cali.

Isn’t it possible that the “made in china” are the boxes for plastic toys (yellow thing) also on display under the towels ? It would have been fair to check the exact label on the towels… even if I wouldn’t bet much on the “made in France” ;-)
Anyway, there are a lot of ’souvenirs’ bearing the name of the place you visit that are national or worldwide standard goods where locals just stencil the name of their village on ;-)
Uranus, I would make it an honor not to entertain a foreigner like you.

possibly, carole, but i doubt it. this stand sold linens. the things on the boxes looked like they were there to hide the boxes.

Ok, ok… I wanted to argue that 20 pcs of little towels in those big boxes did not seem realistic but I checked on the web and the Groupe Deveaux is a big textile manufacturer. (so yes, I like to be right ;-)
I am sorry about the state of the French textile industry… but I don’t think we are the only ones (Levi’s closes its last 2 sewing plants in the States http://www.msnbc.msn.com/Default.aspx?id=3909407&p1=0)
Sorry also to be arguing so much tonight but I went through Uranus blog and I guess I feel attacked…

Comment by Carole 07.24.06 @ 9:08 am

don’t feel attacked. i’m not saying france is the only one with things made in china. china makes junk for EVERYONE! :D i only include it here because this blog is about france, and i thought that was sort of amusing.

don’t take uranus too seriously. i mean, his name is URANUS!!! hahaha! he is a troll to france.
