Ok, ok... I wanted to argue that 20 pcs of little towels in those big boxes did not seem realistic but I checked on the web and the Groupe Deveaux is a big textile manufacturer. (so yes, I like to be right ;-)
I am sorry about the state of the French textile industry... but I don't think we are the only ones (Levi's closes its last 2 sewing plants in the States http://www.msnbc.msn.com/Default.aspx?id=3909407&p1=0)
Sorry also to be arguing so much tonight but I went through Uranus blog and I guess I feel attacked...

Isn't it possible that the "made in china" are the boxes for plastic toys (yellow thing) also on display under the towels ? It would have been fair to check the exact label on the towels... even if I wouldn't bet much on the "made in France" ;-)
Anyway, there are a lot of 'souvenirs' bearing the name of the place you visit that are national or worldwide standard goods where locals just stencil the name of their village on ;-)
Uranus, I would make it an honor not to entertain a foreigner like you.

When you see that the price of a made in china "provence patterned towel" is 20 euros, imagine if it was made in france, prices would be 50 or 100 euros for a little handkerchief!
La france est trop chere, c'est trop injuste!

Most souvenirs are not made in France because French people are on strike, don´t want to work or simply, it´s not their responsibility entertaining any foreigner like us.

Personally, I go for the "made in China", guarantee of quality, of service and I feel good giving my money to someone who worked for it rather than wasting it on an spoilt, lazy and arrogant stomach.

The best story about this kind of thing is one my father used to tell when I was a kid. Sometime in the 1930's, one of his friends had gone to a North African French colony (I don't remember if it was Algeria, Morocco, or Tunisia), and had brought back, as a present for his parents, a rug that he had bought at a souk there. But when his parents saw the tag on the back of the rug, they immediately realized that this rug had been manufactured at his own father's textile mill, in Roubaix! This was the era when not everything was made in China yet.

Pugs are cute, but I still like Boston terriers better. :o)
