Outgoing Email Disabled by Orange/France Telecom

orange france telecomAs of yesterday, have you noticed that you’re not able to send out email, and your internet service provider is Orange (previously called Wanadoodoo)? Of course your Orange email works but not your businesses or private email smtp accounts from your sites. (i.e., yourname@yourwebsite.com). You might have thought that your server was down, which prompted a near nervous breakdown. The good news is: your site’s server is probably fine. The reason why your email client isn’t working correctly is that Orange doesn’t want you to be using your own mail server. They want you to use theirs ( smtp.orange.fr ). Nevermind that it’s for your business or that you simply don’t want to use smtp.orange.fr and see your emails delivered 3 days after you send them. Orange disabled outgoing email without any notice.

We’re fortunate we don’t have them as a service provider but if you’re one of the many unlucky ones, there are a couple of things you can do: 1) resistance is futile so you must acquiesce to THE ORANGE and change the smtp to Orange’s slow server, which will allow you to send outgoing email from your own email address but be aware that your outgoing mail might be extremely slow and could often take a long time (days!) to be sent out, which is no good for businesses; 2) change service providers if possible but remember that free.fr does exactly the same thing (however, at least they warn you about it); 3) make a complaint to tech service at Orange. Of course, you’ll have to call them (dial 3900) and pay .34 centimes (45 cents) per minute. You could be wasting your money, though. I don’t think know that calling them will change anything, however.

There’s an option “4″!

Your SMTP provider may provide service on a port other than port 25. I think Orange will only be blocking the default SMTP ports. So, if you have the opportunity of using another port, you’ll be okay. My mum has an Orange/Wanadoo livebox in France and sending outgoing mail via another SMTP service provider (on port 2525) works fine.

the 4th solution works. My 1and1.co.uk uses smtp port 587. Yon don’t need orange account at all.

Neither Port 2525 or 587 worked for me- anybody have another suggestion for a port? Thanks

Thanks for the information. One of my clients is based in France and hasn’t been able to send mail. Looks like we know why now. This kind of ISP nannying is a real pain and doesn’t help anyone. I agree strongly with the comment that it should be the server administrators of the mail gateways that should tighten up security rather than the ISPs.

I am using my lap top on a French Orange LAN. I can receive mails in Outloon but I cannot send. I reied smtp.orange.fr but it doesn’t wrk. What should I do?

En / On Thunderbird
smtp: smtp.orange.fr
Port 25
Desmarcar uso de nombre y contraseña en opciones del servidor SMTP (Uncheck use name and pass on smtp server opctions.)
Todo correcto! ¡Funciona! (All goes ok ! )

PS: Sorry for my bad english…

Has anybody been having problems sending emails for instance using Outlook B T in France where Orange server is current?

Comment by S Smith 01.24.09 @ 12:02 pm

Can’t believe… first entry in this forum is two years old and still the same crap with sending eMails in France trough a non orange.fr smtp is going on. Port 2525 wasn’t working but 587 well. In which century they are living down here? Greets from yet beautiful cote d’azure.

Comment by Alex from CH 07.26.09 @ 12:55 pm

it doesnt work! I ve tried 2525, 587. mail.gmx.net and smtp.france.fr
the ports are free an my livebox.

….this is typical of France. Orange are acting in an uncompetitive manner and I think the EU Commission should be advised.

You should try a number of different ports. 2525, 587, 250, etc.. 587 works for me.

All, just come across this forum having not been able to send email from France. Port 587 works for me so thanks for the help but I am dumbstruck at Orange’s attitude. Absolutely unbelievable….

Comment by Andy 09.15.09 @ 12:56 am

This has just started happening for me within the last two months. Port 587 doesn’t work, in fact every single suggestion I’ve come across doesn’t work. I’m forced to use gmail which is a temporary measure only – I hope! Bloomin’ Orange. Anybody else having this problem at the moment.

Comment by Ruth 01.22.10 @ 7:36 am

….587 appears to be the one that generally works. I have written letters to Orange, to the French Government and EU Commission trading departments on this. The Commission responded and said that they were aware of this but at this time the French Government were not being helpful (;-) are they ever)… basically Orange have the market sewn up in France so basically can do what they want. If you have a problem and you ring Orange you will generally get nowhere, spend loads of money and in some cases have receive abuse and have the phone put down on you… perhaps relocating to another country is a solution – it worked for me!

Hi!

How does one define, using Eudora for instance, which port mail is sent out from?

Many thanks

Same crap wit Orange server..3 years later. It worked for 4 days, I was able to send emails from Outlook with my ISP Smtp address but today Orange must have done something since I cannot send emails and I tried every conceivable ports.

October 2010 and situation is still the same. France, especially south of France is fairy tale land!
However, port 2525 works!

Comment by BB 11.20.10 @ 5:32 pm

The following page mentions the problem and a potential solution that can be tested:

Comment by Nate 01.23.11 @ 9:37 am

There is an online test at http://smtp.icannotconnect.com that tells you if your ISP is blocking outbound port 25
