It's just a translation of the American book with the same title. As asinine as it sounds (sorry couldn't resist a good pun), it is relevant because so many people are now backpacking through America's forests and mountains. I don't know how applicable it is in France where you tend to stop in "refuges."

Shock value sells. It’s called “concept”. The real question is: who needs a guide on how to poop in France?! It’s different here in the law/rule-freak U.S. Did you hear celeb-philosopher Bernard-Henri Lévy recalling the story of stopping his chauffeur in the middle of America’s typical nowhere for a much needed pee while researching for his post-Tocqueville bok “American Vertigo”? He got spotted/stopped by a local cop, told him he was following in Tocqueville’s steps. Turns out the cop had read Tocqueville’s book (no kidding), loved it, and gave BHL no ticket for defacing America’s pristine roadside. BHL still doesn’t undertsand why he couldn’t “pisser” where he wanted–like any good Frenchman…

I wonder what the difference is between an “environmental” and a “non-environmental” approach to this lost art (which, by the way, I never lost, since I never acquired it to begin with…!).
