As to the compulsory learning of La Marseillaise, I have some vague recollection of learning part of it in school but never learned the whole thing, so whenever I have to sing it (very rarely) I just fake it, just like I did in school all these years ago. It's like these knowledge tests that immigrants have to successfully achieve in order to immigrate - a lot of the population would fail those! Does that make them less of a citizen?
